Yoga Therapy:
First thing to know about Yoga Therapy is that its nothing like a yoga class or a 1-2-1 yoga session. Its not only looking at postures and misalignments in the body but also working with various pathologies like cancer, MS, arthritis, PTSD, autoimmune conditions, depression, insomnia, pain to name just a few. The initial assessment is very detailed, and will include a detailed medical and health history and physical assessment. I will look at working with the client holistically taking into account their lifestyle, diet, their body's constitution etc to get to the root of the dis-ease.
This holistic approach, utilises yoga tools and therapy models to rebalance and heal the entire human system. So although I've studied the pathologies, yoga therapy itself is not disease oriented, it is individual oriented so I treat the individual in front of me rather than the label assigned to them, which means that yoga therapy works really well with all the other healthcare modalities.
Yoga itself is unique that it works on every aspect of our physical and mental body. I start with the physical body making it more comfortable and at ease, and once that improves, then I can look at the energy, which can change so much by simply breathing better and there are a whole load of tools when it comes to breath.
But of course our body and energy are hugely affected by our mind. Mind and body are not separate, what goes on in the mind affects the body, and what goes on in the body affects the mind, plus how we perceive the world, our personality, our values all significantly impact our mind and therefore our general wellbeing.
